Dagne Dover Bag Comparisons: Small Edition

I thought it might be helpful to compare the relative sizes of Dagne Dover's bags, so I've sorted all of their shoulder/crossbody bags into five categories. This "Small" category consists mostly of bags that measure less than 12" on their longest side. I hope these dimension comparisons and side-by-side photos will help you better gauge the sizes of Dagne Dover's other small bag designs in relation to those you might already own!

  • Small Landon: 12" L x 6" W x 7.5" H
  • Small Dakota: 9.5" L x 5" W x 13" H
  • Small Allyn: 12" L x 4.75" W x 10.5" H
  • Ava Bucket Bag: 10" L x 7.5" W x 12" H     (discontinued style)
  • Midi Tote (not pictured): 11.75" L x 5" W x 10.5" H      (discontinued style)

I used a Small Landon in Quartz, Small Dakota in Haze Camo, Small Allyn in Holographic Leather, and an Ava Bucket Bag in Steel Gray for the pictures in this post. All of these colors were limited edition, so keep an eye out for them on the secondhand market!

Accessories featured in the packing photos include the Accordion Travel Wallet in Bone, Small Lola in Oxblood, Small Scout Pouch in Quartz, and the Mara Phone Sling in Block Party Print. Additional items include an iPad Mini, a small squirt bottle of hand sanitizer, and a small 12 fl oz bottle of water.

Dagne Dover 15" Tote Review (Legend Tote Predecessor)

Let's begin with a little backstory on the discontinued 15" Totes (taken from my "Tote Size Guide")!

The 15" Tote was Dagne Dover's staple piece along with the original clutch wallet until the introduction of the Mini Tote in Spring 2014. It is named not necessarily for its overall width (approximately 18.5" inches at the widest point), but for the maximum laptop size the interior laptop sleeve can accommodate (15"). The key difference visually between the 13" Tote and the 15" tote is that the 13" Tote's handles can be easily folded down, whereas the 15" Tote's handles are rigid and stand straight up. The Tote was re-designed early on to be lighter and to fix various issues that arose with the handles. The most recent re-designed version, now called the Legend Tote, has slightly different dimensions than the Totes of this size that were released prior to March 2nd, 2017.
  • 15" Tote Specs: 15" L (at smallest point) x 12" H x 7" W, 8" handle drop, 3.4lb weight
  • Legend Tote Specs: 14 ¾" L x 11 ½" H x 7" W, 9" handle drop, 2.9lb weight

While I usually prefer Dagne Dover’s leather items over their larger coated canvas totes, I’ve found myself using my 15" Tote often this year. My parents live a few hours away, and it seems to be the perfect size for the car trip and an overnight stay with them. Although a Large Allyn or Landon could also work for this purpose, the Landons don’t have as much laptop padding (I take my 15” work laptop with me), and I’ve found the Large Allyn is too large and has a tendency to slouch/tip over.

Pictured with XS Landon, S Hunter, Accordion Travel Wallet, and S/L Scout Pouches

One great thing about the 15" Tote is that you can fit a smaller purse inside with room to spare. I usually pack either a Small Andra or an XS Landon along with my 15” laptop, a thin folder, a Small Hunter full of toiletries, and a couple of Scout pouches for chargers and other odds and ends (plus an extra shirt or pair of leggings if needed). The fact that the main compartment zips up is also a plus.

  • Although it hasn't happened to me yet with these bags, I have heard from numerous people that the larger coated canvas bags tend to develop a slouch over time—sometimes, it's severe. I suspect it's happening to the re-designed Legends in particular, which contain less coated canvas material in the interior. Stuffing the bag with lightweight filler material while not in use could potentially help the bag retain its shape.

Color comparison: Lola/Slim Wallet in Graphite, 15" Tote in Steel Gray (I think!), Large Allyn in Slate, Ava in Steel Gray

I purchased this bag second-hand with minimal information, so I had trouble correctly identifying its color for the longest time. I assumed it was Graphite at first, but I later bought a Graphite Slim Wallet and realized that definitely wasn't right! I then figured it must be Slate due to its slight blue tint, but it turns out I was wrong about that too. The closest color match is actually Steel Gray—and after comparing the interior materials to my 15" Tote in Linen, I discovered my assumption that this was a Legend tote was also inaccurate! (Steel Gray came out a season or two before the coated canvas bags were rebranded/redesigned.) Oof.

Pictured with the Large Ryan Laptop Bag in Clay Red (SS19)

The only downside I’ve found is that because the bag is so boxy and rigid, it makes it a bit awkward to lug around in stores—it juts out so much that I worry I’ll knock over or break something! I recently ordered a Large Ryan Laptop Bag to try out in place of the 15" Tote, and although the compartments are great and it's a wonderfully functional bag, I'm going to sell the Ryan because the silhouette/aesthetic is not for me. (The newly-released large Wade diaper bag might do the trick; the width is more substantial and the structured silhouette appeals to me as well!)

  • Large Ryan Dimensions: 16” L  x 12.25” H 2.5” W
  • Large Wade Dimensions (not pictured): 16.25” L x 12” H x  6” W

Fun fact: my very first Dagne Dover bag was a 15” Tote in Linen.  I'll admit I haven’t used it in years, but I won't part with it anytime soon—it’s too special to me. I’ll never forget how awe-struck I felt when I saw it in person for the first time. Based on the state of my Dagne-filled house right now, I'd say it clearly made an impression. 🙈

Bag Review: Dagne Dover Ava Bucket Bag (Discontinued)

I originally posted this review to an old blog of mine on 4/27/17 and wanted to substantially update it now that a couple of years have (nearly) passed.

Sadly, I have learned that the Ava has been discontinued—Dagne Dover does not plan to release new colors or re-stock this bag in their core colors. If you're interested in purchasing an Ava in a color other than Bone, you will likely need to purchase it second-hand.

  • Ava Specs: L 10” x H 12” x W 7.5”, 10 ½” handle drop, 1.6 lb weight
  • Colors/Patterns: Onyx, Bone, Bone Onyx, Steel Gray, Steel Gray Suede, Oxblood, Rust Suede (personal favorite!), Jasmine, Blush Dusk, Sand, Sultan's Windowpane, Slate

Unlike the Simone Satchel or the Charlie Tote, the Ava wasn't a "must-have" bag for me at the start. I already had a bucket bag that I liked, and the slouchy top/structured bottom didn't particularly appeal to me for some reason. The silhouette quickly grew on me after I started using it; it gives off an 'effortless' look, in part because it's effortless to carry. I now own seven Avas (I sold the Bone Onyx Ava from my original review), and as you may have guessed, it's one of my favorite Dagne Dover styles ever.

One thing I love about this bag is that when I push it behind my hip to do something like load groceries from my cart to the conveyor belt, it actually stays there. Based on my experience so far with the Ava, you can squish this bag against your body, hold it comfortably between your legs on the seat in a car, and tilt it to rest against your lower back when you need it to be out of the way. Also, the Ease of Pulling Over Shoulder is a 5/5; you can do it one-handed and in one swift motion, which is great if you don't have another hand to spare.

Smaller items (i.e. my Dagne Dover card case, phone, pen, and keys on the key leash) are incredibly easy to get in and out of the Ava. On the other hand, larger items (such as pouches and mini notebooks) may require some special maneuvering to remove. There are two slip pockets (one for the card case and one for a phone), and the lack of zippered pockets seems a little unusual.  The interior is a light-colored camo print fabric that isn't stain-proof, so consider using a small pouch to hold things that might potentially leak, break open, or melt.

Key Leash Tip: When I first started using the bag, I was worried that items in the half of the bag containing the key leash might get scratched up by my keys. If you own a Dagne Dover tote with a water bottle holder, put the holder in that side of your Ava. You should be able to drop your keys into the water bottle holder (even alongside a standard plastic water bottle) using the key leash, thus protecting the contents around it (see above pic).

Can the Ava fit a laptop? Even with the sides snapped, the Ava fits my 12" Macbook perfectly!

One issue I've noticed is that the bottom rim of the Ava bags tend to slouch. All but two of mine have this problem, and I'm not optimistic it can be corrected once it sets in. The smooth leather along the bottom also seems more prone to collect scratches and other signs of wear.

A more extreme example of aforementioned slouching and wear
If pick-pocketing is a problem where you live or where you're going, the Ava's "open" design isn't ideal. Even if you use your arm to pin the opening against your body, it still may not be enough to stop a thief from reaching in and swiping something with the right distraction. Because there are no zippered pockets, smaller items have a higher risk of being stolen—you may want to consider keeping some of them inside a large clutch or pouch that can't be easily removed while the bag is against your body and the snaps are still closed.

Wishlist

I had a few colors on my wishlist that I'll have to DIY now that I know the Ava has been discontinued, so please hit me up if you have a cheap Bone Ava in poor/fair cosmetic condition you want to sell!

I couldn't get the pink and violet shades quite right, but you get the idea!

I also had my fingers crossed for a Mini Ava, but alas. Maybe they'll release an equivalent neoprene bucket bag some day.

My original post about the Mini Ava idea from the Dagne Dover "Wishlist" page, which will now live here: A Mini Ava with no central divider would be awesome. If the body were more narrow than the full-size Ava and had a long strap, it could be the perfect way to carry a water bottle in addition to other every-day essentials. (I try to bring a bottle of water with me when I go out, so my smaller bags like the Andra tend to go unused for that reason.) Bonus points for a central neoprene water bottle holder and zip or slip pocket compartments placed around the interior of the bag.

I believe the Ava is an above-average bag that, while perhaps not as revolutionary as the Charlie Tote, strikes a great balance between function and aesthetic. (In fact, I think it's one of the least unwieldy shoulder bags I've ever owned!)
